Here ’s the good news : SpaceXlanded a giant Starship for the first time Wednesday ( March 3 ) , after reach an EL of 6.2 miles ( 10 klick ) . The regretful newsworthiness : It exploded 8 minutes afterward .

After two like trial stop with Starships SN8 and SN9 failing to decelerate down enough before landing and explode on impact , SpaceX tried a new techniquefor the landing of SN10 . All three skyrocket engines at the bottom of the 160 - foot - grandiloquent ( 49 meters ) , 30 - foot - broad ( 9 molarity ) simple machine fire up as the Eruca vesicaria sativa compensate itself before landing ; the rocket also was capable to slow down enough to make a piano landing . On SpaceX ’s YouTube provender , John Insprucker , the company ’s principal integration locomotive engineer , declare the landing place a success and end the stream .

He underline , as SpaceX often does , that the succeeder of the psychometric test is shape by data collect , not a perfect landing .

It was Starship ’s most impressive achievement to date , and at once demonstrated how far the project — intend to one sidereal day reach out themoonand Mars — has come even in the last few calendar month of work in Boca Chica , Texas .

But as the dust cleared , it became clear that SN10 had crunched a bit on impact , sit on the pad with a pronounced , awkward leaning . A fire broke out at the base , and picture streams from bothNASASpaceflight and Lab Padre showed a robotic fire extinguisher unsuccessfully battling the flaming .

Eight moment after touchdown , about 14 minutes and 45 seconds after takeoff , there was a herculean explosion somewhere inside the rocket , which uses combustible methane as propellent . The heavy metallic element body structure was hurled into the air a second clip by the gust .

And just when we thought the fun was over , SN10 take to the sky for a second time today ! 😂 capital horizon from @LabPadre . pic.twitter.com/amX4nR91X5March 3 , 2021

As of this committal to writing , it ’s still not clear precisely what cause the blowup .
