Netflix has canceledOne Day at a Time— but the critical darling’s fervent fan base isn’t letting it go down without a fight.
The streaming service announced Thursday that the series — a reimagining of the classic Norman Lear sitcom of the same name — would not be returning for a fourth season.
“The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season,” Netflix wrote in a statement on Twitter.
While the original series focused on a divorced mom raising her two teenage daughters in Indianapolis, the revival gave the premise a Latin spin, with star Justina Machado playing Penelope Alvarez, a Cuban-American Army Nurse Corps veteran raising her two children with the help of her mother (Rita Moreno).

The series was widely praised for tackling heavy topics not typically seen in family sitcoms, like PTSD, depression, sexuality, drug addiction and religion.
“I’m so grateful to have played Penelope Alvarez. I don’t even know how to begin to express my gratitude to everyone,” she wrote. “Truly, I am so honored that we got to tell our stories. Yes it was a Latinx family but it was a universal story about family and love. An American Familia (heart).”
Executive producers Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce also issued an emotional statement.
“We had the time of our lives making this show.. So while our hearts are very heavy, they are also bursting with appreciation for this amazing experience,” the statement read. “And for all of you. All of you who told us how muchOne Day at a Timemeans to you. We’ve worked on many shows, but never have we experienced the outpouring of love, connection, and support like we have with ODAAT.”
Lin-Manuel Mirandaeven hopped on the rescue train, appealing to NBC directly.
“Hey @nbc…I hear you like comedies with built-in fan bases that do even better on YOUR network than at their previous homes…#saveODAAT,” he wrote on Twitter, using the hashtag that started trending shortly after news broke.
His plea was one of many from fans desperately hoping their show might live to see another day.
One Day at a Timepremiered in January 2017, 42 years after its predecessor. The third season hit screens in February.
