That makes a photon into an on - off shift , which is useful , but not as versatile as a dimmer . scientist have found a way to change the wavelength of photon without absorbing them .

They made a crystal into which two streams of photons were channeled . One was a load of infrared photons of 1300 micromillimetre wavelengths . The other was a laser beam of 1550 nm photons . The crystallization latticework meld and directed the two flow , give off a flow of 710 nanometre wavelength photons .
With crystals like this , and some careful calculations , the “ on - off ” nature of computing might be changed . alternatively of switching bits on or off , they can be in many different country .
