Killing fauna ai n’t pretty but if we eat them , we should face the reality of how it happen . Michael Ruhlman did just that , he went inside Schmidt Family Farms and was shew how the volaille you eat are kill , bled , de - feathered and processed before they hit the market .
Schmidt Family Farms actually specializes in love but allocates a certain part of the farm to be play by Bradley Cramer , who raises chicken during the summer . The chickens are allowed to stray around the farm for six and a one-half weeks before they ’re process .
And how does the processing work ? The chickens are fed into a funnel where they are kill . According to Ruhlman , to kill the crybaby “ you pinch the crop and windpipe , skid a tongue vertically through the neck behind them , turn the knife 90 degrees , and cut the principal arterial blood vessel ” and then rent them bleed out . The birds are then put into a pot of 140 - degreee H2O to loosen the feathers and fed into a defeathering car which look like a spinning bucket with rubber dentition inside of it . Then the head , stage and viscera are removed and lastly , the shuttlecock are tossed into a bucket of 40 - degree water system before they ’re package and shipped out . Again , it ’s not for the faint of spunk but it is how chickens get to your home . [ RuhlmanviaLA Times Food ]
