Fringe gives us the mother of all creep-outs

Now that Fringe is miraculously renewed for a 4th phenomenal season , the show is back to blow our intellect . I count four canny misdirections in last night ’s episode .

really , “ Bloodline ” could have felt laughably contrived — but unlike last workweek ’s instalment , Anna Torv all sold this one , and once again it ’s hard to bang where our sympathies should dwell . Spoilers onward …

So we ’re deal with the issue of Fauxlivia ’s baby already . And last night ’s episode grapple to manipulate out the viewer a few time as to where exactly it was go :

1 ) Fauxlivia ’s gestation is survive to go awfully wrong due to something called Viral Propagated Eclampsia . Which , plain , is a made - up disease that is both hereditary and viral . Because Fauxlivia ’s sister died in childbirth from the condition , she has an 80 percent chance of being a carrier too . The early scenes of the episode , where Fauxlivia talk to her medico and her mom , are some of the best acting Anna Torv has ever done . Like when her mom tell that Fauxlivia would make a groovy mother some day , and Fauxlivia says “ Mom , ” with a grin that just falls aside after a second . So you sort of expect that we ’re going to be dealing Fauxlivia ’s choice of whether to keep the babe in bitchiness of the health risks . But no , because

2 ) Someone has kidnapped Fauxlivia . And whoever it is , they ’re passing well organized and know about the mysterious GPS trackers installed in all Fringe Division agents . And it ’s important enough that we see an Observer watching Fauxlivia ’s building when it last down . And the perps are experimenting on Fauxlivia ’s baby ! The scenes of Fauxlivia drugged and strapped to a table while the aesculapian bastards horn in her and inject her with hooey are vestal medical repugnance . The eldritch lights civilize on her tum and the loud churning of the fetal heartbeat … It sets up the expectation that we ’re fail to see them taste to do something monstrous and peradventure deadly to the unborn babe . Are they trying to harvest something ?

3 ) And then you start to remember that the child is n’t a normal baby any more , what with all of the weird form bulging out of Fauxlivia ’s tum . While she ’s trying to bunk from her medical repugnance show , using all of the raw cunning and resourcefulness at her disposal , her stomach is looking very facehugger - y. And meanwhile , the nasty doctor maintain push the drugs and horseshit , even though the nursemaid keep warning that they ’re get going Too Far . The body horror gets more and more extreme , while the facility they ’re in looks weirder and more detestable , with the flickring illumination and tents and uncanny bill poster for Typhoid stab . And the doctor talk about her ligaments becoming supple and using a “ joint expander ” on her as much as her bones can stand . Are they trying to make her have some variety of mutant Cthulhu baby ?

4 ) And then you sort of think Fauxlivia ’s going to die . Which would make things a bit tidier , and get rid of the whole “ Peter has to choose between the two Olivias ” office . Fauxlivia escapes from the Evil Medical Warehouse and is stumbling around Chinatown where the great unwashed are randomly wearing nightmarish mask and there are carcasses and reddened lanterns everywhere , and it all look deathly and weird . And Fauxlivia ’s suddenly like twelve month significant , and lecture about how they accelerated her pregnancy , and Charlie discourage that she wo n’t make it through delivery . And Liv make Lincoln promise to save the baby , and then it ’s born , and Fauxlivia ’s lay all still and does n’t seem to be breathing .

But of course , then it turns out that Fauxlivia pull round – and we recognise the truth , which is that this was all Walternate ’s game . Because Walternate knew , somehow , about Fauxlivia ’s VPE and he was dictated to save his grandson . ( And yes , even though Walternate remain steadfast in his determination not to experiment on tyke , he was willing to do this outre “ pregnancy accleration ” affair on his own grandson , because the alternative was probably an abortion – although that password is never refer , this being web television system . )

The only veridical question is , was Fauxlivia meant to live the subprogram ? I intend , they seemed vaguely implicated about how much joint expansion she could stand , but the aesculapian team seemed right smart more interested about the baby than about the mother . In any character , it sour out that accelerating the gestation enable both the mother and the baby to survive , because the virus could n’t replicate fast enough to keep up .

So once again , we discover that both Walters are morally grey and capable of immense unethical behavior , and they both especially love to subject Olivia to their weird experimental treatments .

But what does the Observer mean at the end when he say , “ It is happen . ” Ominous !

The main through - line of the episode is that Anna Torv manages to make us wish dead about Fauxlivia , as much as we would about the “ substantial ” Olivia . Even though we ’ve seen ‘ Liv do some horrible things , we still want her to be o.k. and we want the scumbags who are strapping her down and doing evil aesculapian stuff to her to break nastily . And that makes it easier to commiserate with ‘ Liv ’s admirer who all care about her as well .

Meanwhile , in the process of investigating the snatch , Lincoln and Charlie find Henry the cab driver , who take them to the truth about last fall ’s Olivia Substitution Strategem . ( And we also learn that Charlie is dating bug girl ! That make me incredibly well-chosen . ) Lincoln and Henry make almost as good a team as Lincoln and Charlie . And it ’s cool to see Henry being brought on the interior a piece more . By the end , Lincoln and Charlie are reasonably close to piecing together the true statement about what happened to alt - Broyles .

And Lincoln at last tells Fauxlivia that he bang her ! You have to wonder if the love life triangle with the two Olivias and Peter will really become a right Love Parallelogram or something .

Also : In the other universe of discourse , Bloom County is still go away , but it ’s call Opus the Peahen . And The West Wing is apparently still on the gentle wind ! Also , Francis Ford Coppola directed Taxi Driver , and it ’s not all that well - known a pic – at least , Lincoln Lee ’s never heard of it .
