Spoilers ahead …

I have severely mixed feeling about the final sawed-off season of Continuum , which is just wrapping up . They understandably rushed through a lot of game points that they believe they were going to have more sentence to develop — the Traveler , anyone?—and at the same time , it seems pretty obvious that they were driving further and further into the weeds with all the various subplots , and this was never going to come together utterly .

Starship Test 9

At the same fourth dimension , these final six episode did give us some closure on the character we like about most — principally , Alec , Julian , Kiera and to some extent Carlos . The sendoffs for Alec and Julian seemed especially good and the show did put a destiny of energy into read the two stepbrothers growing up and taking command of their own destinies .

So what bechance in the net episodes of Continuum ? In a nutshell , the commando squad from the evil alternating future flack the Vancouver PD and kills a long ton of hoi polloi to get back Kellogg ( who has been arrest ) and the key to their time portal machine . Once they have both those thing , they ’re ready to fire up the portal vein and bring in their army back to 2015 and endeavor to advance their future war before it starts .

In the end , Kiera and the clay of the VPD have to attack the soldier ’ facility and put a halt to the metre portal . Dillon ( who ’s become a good guy cable again ) is killed , and the portal is futzed up , partly thanks to some sabotage from Alec . Kellogg tries to do something sneaky and whoop the time auto so he can go back to 2012 and kill Kiera and the Liber8 gang when they arrive from 2077 — but Alec has outsmart him and he gets microwave into the aloof past alternatively .

And then , we get that end I mentioned — the one that in reality bring fairly well as an ending . Kiera gets to go home to 2077 , and discovers that it ’s a better future . There ’s no Corporate Congress , no evil dystopian law force , etc . She did it ! She secure everything !

But what makes this a good ending is that there ’s a catch — Kiera incur to go live in the happy variant of the future she came from , and her Logos Sam is there . But she can never contact Sam , because there ’s another version of Kiera in this future ( one who did n’t go back in time ) and she ’s Sam ’s female parent . So Kiera can only gaze at her Logos from across the playground . That ’s the perfect sort of bittersweet note that keep this end from being too good to be genuine , and also feel , in a weird way , like justice .

Because one thought kept total to mind as I watch the last few episodes of Continuum : This show had the most unlikable , self - centered , horrible protagonist ever . Kiera really is the uncollectible . She ’s just the worst . People point it out a bit in those final episodes — Kellogg even basically says that she ’s just like him , because they both chose themselves over others . Carlos also gives her a great deal of dirty looks .

But nobody call Kiera on her dogshit quite enough . Especially after her selfishness gets a whole police station full of good cops kill — she had the hazard to destroy that machine but did n’t , because she wanted to go home . And she could have brought the VPD to attack that construction weeks ago , but did n’t , part to quash bloodletting but mostly because she want to go home .

After the VPD carnage , the show seems to realize just how tremendous a person Kiera is , and so we get an endless succession of scene where masses front at the camera and tell us how great she is . Carlos , who has been aright accusing her of being a rest jerk , suddenly starts say that it ’s all just because he does n’t want to lose her . Alec make a big lecture about how Kiera made him a well someone . Even Curtis — whom Kiera killed , and who help oneself kill an alternating Kiera — give a weirdly farsighted and portentous speech about how Kiera did more to fix the future than everybody else put together , and how she ’s the greatest affair since whipped cream and hot fudge . You roll in the hay that a show ’s main character has no redeeming qualities , when everybody has to intermit in the middle of the action to list their redeem qualities .

Kiera is just the bad . She constantly misunderstands every situation she ’s in , and no matter how many times the great unwashed excuse clock time travel to her , she never develop it . To some extent , this is her being the audience surrogate , but after a while it ’s just bonkers . Like , the fact that she spends this whole final miniseason thought process she can go home because she got score on the headland and had a medically have hallucination about her Word — when she knows full well that the time to come she come from is gone and never existed .

Also the worst : Brad , Kiera ’s love life interest , who keep changing incline and is the last individual to realize that the sentence portal is n’t take through refugees , but an invading US Army . Brad was actually more clued - in when he had amnesia .

Meanwhile , the Traveler , whose flock we only catch a cursory explanation of , gets to go back to his utopian hereafter that he was prune off from after he screwed something up — because Kiera fixed everything .

But anyway . It was overnice to see Future Alec seeming all glad and mellow , palling around with Kagame , in the overnice shiny version of 2077 . And I ’m happy that we get to hear that Alec ended up with Emily , instead of the dystopian - next wife that Jason need him to crochet up with . And Carlos gets a square named after him ! Yay ! ( Also cracking : the moment in the finis where Young Alec throws a stone at the water and says he ’s making a tsunami , referring back to what Kagame order him in season one . )

Doctor Who Omega

All in all , Continuum never stopped being a extremely entertaining show with mo of blaze . In retrospect , the predilection for tote up more and more layers of mythos ( such as more prison term travelers and more involved backstories ) was less of a job than the show ’s refusal to admit that its principal case is a selfish , brusk - sighted behemoth who ruins everything . Also , I still think this show had awful potential to be a really mysterious exploration of the immanent nature of dystopia , and the monetary value of hear to make a good humanity , which it did n’t always accomplish , but did attain on a pretty regular basis . At its best , Continuum was among the strongest and most thought - raise scientific discipline fiction TV shows ever made .
