“We were so touched when they asked us to do their wedding, and we sent them a million sketches,” Badgley says. “We spoke briefly, kind of about the aesthetic of it.”
Mischka elaborates, “The look they were going for, which is modern, yet classic.”

Roberts highlighted her tall frame in an elegant white stretch crepe column dress with a striking jeweled collar, while her longtime love wore a white satin gown with a draped bodice and a tulle train.
“They’re so, so different,” Badgley says of the two brides. “Robin, she’s so statuesque with that incredible figure, and she’s like the Empire State Building. She loves simplicity. … We knew from the get-go what the dress was going to be. It’s just 1,000% Robin.”
He continues, “I mean, it was almost dictated within a moment that it was just going to be a stunning white column, and it’s all about that gorgeous jewel neckline. It’s that racer silhouette that she looks so sexy and so beautiful in. It’s super, super sleek.”
Badgley notes that because Roberts' dress was so understated, they really had to nail the fit and fine details. “I think it’s hard to do a gown that’s so simple because it’s got to be so, so perfect, but anything that’s really simple on [Roberts] is very powerful just because it’s just so clean and stoic on her,” he explains.

As for Laign, the pair aimed for a much different vibe. “Amber’s the polar opposite. Amber is… She’s vintage, she’s soft,” Badgley shares prompting his partner to add, “Romantic.”
“She’s romantic,” Badgley agrees. “She likes a little bit of drape. She likes a little bit of coziness. She likes a little bit of nostalgia. Her dress was polar opposite. It was very sumptuous, and a little drapey, and very sinuous.”

The idea, he adds, was to highlight Laign’s lovely shape: “She has a gorgeous hourglass figure. We even did a beautiful cloud of tulle as a train off the gown at the last minute. It’s still sexy, it’s got a high slit.”
Laign’s train was cleverly designed to be removed as the event transitioned into the reception. “They’re dancers, so we made the train detachable, of course,” Badgley shares.

In a sweet detail, the designers say Roberts and Laign were touchingly old-fashioned when it came to one part of the design process. “They didn’t want to see each other in the gowns. They wanted to be surprised,” Badgley reveals. “We would do a fitting atGood Morning Americafor one of them. We’d then zoom around and bring our entourage and do another fitting in this one’s apartment, and then we’d circle back the next day and do a different fitting back at Robin’s beautiful apartment on the Hudson.”
“I mean, they really wanted to keep an element of secret mystery, and I thought that was really cute,” he continues. “It was so sentimental to them, and they really handled it, I thought, in such a thoughtful way because it was just so important to them. You could tell they still couldn’t believe it was happening. It was really cute.”
When the women saw their completed looks for the first time — separately, of course — they were overwhelmed. “It was like a quiet hush. You could hear a pin drop,” Badgley recalls. “There were a few tears. There were a lot of smiles, a lot of hugs.”
While the dresses may have made the couple emotional, Badgley says Roberts and Laign were nothing but serene and composed as they looked forward to their big day. “These two went into it knowing that they were going to have a ball. They were confident, they were beautiful, they were comfortable, and that’s why we felt like it worked on all levels.”

Roberts and Laign — who met on a blind date back in 2005 — tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in their home garden before celebrating with a reception inside a rustic barn at Farmington Gardens in Farmington. They welcomed around 250 guests, including many of Roberts’GMAcolleagues.
On Sunday, Roberts shared a pair of photos of her and Laign in their dresses onInstagramand reflected on the wedding that was.
