SAN FRANCISCO — Far below the stock-still covert of theGreenlandice weather sheet sprawl sea mile of basic principle — and extend through that bedrock for secretive to 1,000 sea mile ( 1,600 kilometers ) is a valley that may arrest a subterranean river , transport pee from central Greenland to the northerly coast .

In the yesteryear , planes flying overhead had partially mapped a bouldery , subsurface vale under the ice , but their radar coverage of the realm left gaps , said Christopher Chambers , a researcher at Hokkaido University in Sapporo , Japan .

The model on the right shows water flow in northern Greenland in the presence of a valley extending under glacial ice.

To build a clear exposure of what lurks below Greenland ’s surface , Chambers and his colleagues make simulation to search the valley at different depths and model how piddle mightmelt from the open of a glacierto the depths below — perhaps create a flux river , Chambers told Live Science . He presented their determination on Dec. 9 here at the yearly encounter of the American Geophysical Union ( AGU ) .

Radar maps showed that the valley floor was passing level at depths of 980 feet and 1,640 feet ( 300 meters and 500 meters ) below sea level , Chambers said . This is highly strange for a lineament that is so long , " and that in itself is like a potential smoking triggerman that this could be " a spot with active erosion or sediment deposition , such as a river , he explained .

The hidden river could lie 330 feet to 980 feet (100 meters to 300 meters) below sea level.

First , the researcher digitally model the vale and removed the block of missing data . Once they had a continuous , opened valley , they put it in a Greenland simulation , and melting piddle from the glacier start to redistribute itself underground , flowing along the vale ’s stand . In the simulations , the scientists also incorporated a known hotspot locate deep in Greenland ’s Department of the Interior , and they found that the hot spot generated enough flowing water to travel along the vale all the way from Greenland ’s nerve center to the northerly seashore .

" Eventually if you get it late enough — minus 500 meter [ 1,640 feet ] — the water is now flow the integral distance along the valley and then perish at Petermann Fjord , " creating a pathway that measures up to 1,600 kilometers ( 1,000 miles ) long Chambers said .

In some places , the vale is is more than 9,800 feet ( 3,000 meter ) below Greenland ’s polar surface , he add .

Because this river would be run in darkness for hundreds of miles under the Methedrine , the researchers nominate it " the Dark River , " they wrotein a summary of their research . The Dark River likely does n’t have a very firm or constant flow , because glacier mellow out disperses over a large area , Chambers sound out . The river could once in a while be quite powerful " but only at sure times , " when large reservoirs of meltwater work up up and then release into the vale , he explained .
